Corals help to detect osteoporosis
What do oceans and osteoporosis have in common besides the same initial letter? Hard to believe, but actually a lot. Because both coral reefs and our bones need calcium to remain stable. Researchers at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel have applied their knowledge of corals to the human bone skeleton and developed a test that can detect osteoporosis at an early stage, as reported by NDR Info Perspektiven.

Researchers unite against common ailments
WELLINGDORF. Take chemical knowledge from the depths of the oceans and combine it with medical knowledge about bone loss: The Kiel-based Geomar Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research celebrated its first spin-off, Osteolabs GmbH, which aims to facilitate and accelerate the early detection of the widespread disease osteoporosis with a simple method. The goal of the new company is to bring this novel method to market as a medical product.
